Carsharing statistic 2019: Carsharing in Germany is still on a growing path

At the beginning of 2019 there were 2,46 million registered carsharing users, 350.000 more than the year before. With a growing rate of 21,5 percent, the increase in station-based carsharing was above average. The growing rate of free-floating customers was 14,9 percent, so it is reduced compared to the year before. Overall, carsharing is growing in Germany.

Gunnar Nehrke, CEO of the German Carsharing Association bcs, says:

„The upgrowth of the german carsharing market indicates: More and more people want to use cars in a responsible way and play their own part in the transportation revolution.“

The association is delighted especially by the strong growth of the station-based carsharing sector, because several studies of 2018 show that this version is the most traffic reducing one.

CEO Nehrke explains:

„At this stage, 70 to 80 percent of the customers of station-based carsharing have no car of their own. Cities and municipalities should promote this segment in particular with a widespread establishment of carsharing stations in public places."

Concerning the promotion of carsharing, the association criticizes the German Federal Ministry of Transport: One year after the „Carsharinggesetzes“ (CsgG) has come into force, cities and municipalities still can not implement the law on all points, because the ministry does not present the basic directive.

Christian Hochfeld, executive director of „Agora Verkehrswende “, refers to the recent development of carsharing:

„It is important that carsharing becomes visible and accessible in public space. Carsharing should not be considered as a single measure, but should be established as a permanent component of municipal mobility strategy. The appropriate political framework – like a comprehensive management of carparking and the expansion of low emission zones – can enhance the positive effects of carsharing even more.“

Strong growth of services

20.200 carsharing vehicles are available at the beginning of 2019 in Germany, 2.250 more than the year before. Station-based services provide 11.200 vehicles, which is more than half of the total supply. 9.000 vehicles are offered by free-floating providers.

890 cars of the free-floating sector belong to services that combine station-based and free-floating supply. Some former mere station-based services provide this combination to offer the advantages of both carsharing segments.

New combined services started in 2018 for example in Leipzig and Karlsruhe.

Station-based carsharing is still the backbone for the expansion

Station-based carsharing is now available in 740 cities and municipalities in Germany, which are 63 more than at the beginning of 2018. Mere free-floating services are available in seven metropolis and some urban hinterland of these cities.

The percentage of electric vehicles remains static on a high level. Growing number of electric vehicles in station-based services

The total number of electric vehicles in the fleet of carsharing vehicles remains static in 2018. But within the different sectors there are some changes. The number of electric vehicles in the free-floating sector remains basically static at 1.025. The medium-sized station-based carsharing providers were able to raise the number of electric cars from 321 to 498.

Mere e-car-providers had to deal with degrowth. The number of vehicles decreased from 431 to 304. That was mainly because funding and leasing contracts of many cars expired in 2018. Since the economic viability could not be achieved, the vehicles had been removed from the fleet. Gunnar Nehrke explains:

„The percentage of electric vehicles is 50 times higher than of the national fleet of private cars. That points out: providers want to switch to emission free cars. But the political framework is not appropriate yet: the vehicles are still too expensive. And a concept for subsidizing the establishment of recharging infrastructure at carsharing-stations is still missing. “
